Scene I
Time: Wednesday. Mid-morning. (10:00 am). Spring Break 2015
Setting: Fletcher home in Atlanta, Georgia
(At Rise we
see LISA in the kitchen, as SAMANTHA emerges from her room to talk to her mom)
SAMANTHA:
Hey mom can we talk?
LISA:
Yeah, sure sweetheart what’s on your mind?
SAMANTHA:
Since I am almost a college senior, I think we should go on a month
long family trip cross country
LISA:
Okay, for a cross country trip what did you have in mind?
SAMANTHA:
Well, we could start here at home, drive to Florida and go to
Disney World and Panama City Beach then back track home, and begin our journey
out west, making various stops along the way.
LISA:
Okay we can do that, but since you are over 18 and almost 21,
you will be driving some of the way, so you need to learn the directions, and
geographic location of the stops we make while you are driving. To save on
money, so we don’t have to get so many different rooms, we are going to be
taking an RV.
SAMANTHA:
Okay that seems fair. I can do a little bit of the driving. But
come on mom I am terrible at Geography, and staying in a RV, that means I will
have to be in close, tight quarters with Michael.
(MICHAEL
emerges from his bedroom)
MICHAEL:
That’s right sis, all Michael all the time, for an entire month.
SAMANTHA:
Oh my gosh Michael, shut up, you are so stupid.
(MICHAEL
starts mocking SAMANTHA)
LISA:
Okay, that’s enough you two, you are going at it like little
kids again. Look, Samantha you need to brush up on your geography and find a
way to not fight with your brother or the trip is off.
SAMANTHA
Okay I can brush up on my geography, really I will try my best to
not fight with him, but if he starts it I make no promises of not fighting
back.
LISA:
Okay, Samantha if you get better at geography, then the trip is
on.
MICHAEL:
Wait, how is Samantha going to get better and geography, when
she is so dumb, she doesn’t know what direction North, South, East, and West
and she don’t even know what a compass is.
SAMANTHA:
Whatever Michael, I know more about geography then you, as I
recall I did better in geography in 7th grade than you did.
(MICHAEL
comes after SAMANTHA tackling her to the ground)
LISA:
Really it has not even been 10 minutes since I told you two to
get along and you are already about to kill each other.
SAMANTHA:
He started it
LISA:
I don’t care who started it, you are older than him, and you
need to be the bigger person.
SAMANTHA:
Okay, now do you have a solution for me to brush up on my
geography?
LISA:
Well, as a matter of fact I do.
(SAMANTHA a
little louder)
SAMANTHA:
Are you going to tell me or just stand there?
LISA:
No need to be rude Samantha Christine Fletcher.
MICHAEL:
Ooh Samantha, full name, you are in
trouble.
SAMANTHA:
Real mature Michael
(MICHAEL
exits to his room)
LISA:
If you two are done arguing I will tell you my solution
SAMANTHA:
Okay, I will be the bigger person, this argument is finished.
LISA:
Okay, now for you to brush up on your geography skills use your
globe that talks to you. You remember her don’t you?
SAMANTHA:
Oh my gosh mom, why suggest that when I don’t even know where
that stupid globe is.
LISA:
Yeah, but we still have it, so go find it and it will help you
like it helped you when you struggled through geography in the 7th
grade.
SAMANTHA
Okay, I will find it, but not now I am going to take a nap.
(Exit
SAMANTHA, LISA, and MICHAEL)
End Scene
Scene II
(At rise we
see SAMANTHA in her room ready to take a nap)
SAMANTHA:
If only remembering what I learned in 7th geography was not so
hard.
(SAMANTHA
falls asleep, then wakes up in a strange place)
Hey where I am? Where’s my bed? Where’s my room
(Enter
KIMBERLY the Geographic Hero)
KIMBERLY:
Hi, who are you? You look frightened.
(SAMANTHA
jumps startled)
SAMANTHA:
Hi, I am Samantha, and you are. No I am not frighten, just
startled is all.
KIMBERLY:
Oh, so you are Samantha, I have been sent here on mission to
help you with your geography.
SAMANTHA:
What mission? How did you know about me needing to brush up on
my geography skills? Who are you?
KIMBERLY:
Oh sorry where are my manners. Allow me to introduce myself, I
am the Geographic Hero. The mission I was sent was to help you learn everything
you need to know geographically for you cross country trip. I knew that because
I lair that shows we people who need help with the geography.
SAMANTHA:
Okay, but that still sounds kind of nuts.
KIMBERLY:
To help you learn everything you need to know we are going to
have to start at the beginning. Are you ready?
SAMANTHA:
Yes, I am so ready let’s get started!
KIMBERLY:
First I was you to tell me what you know about geography. It can
be anything from States to state capitals or anything relatable to geography.
SAMANTHA:
Well I know there are 50 states and the capital of Georgia is at
Atlanta and the capital of Tennessee is Nashville. And there are latitude and
longitude lines, but I can’t tell the difference between the two or what they
mean.
KIMBERLY:
That is perfectly okay, we are going to talk about every aspect
of geography starting with the word itself. Geography is a spatial science, a
description of the earth, or more precisely the spatial variation, of how and
why physical and cultural items
differ from place to place.
(SAMANTHA frantically tries to write the
information)
SAMANTHA:
Okay you are going to have to slow
down. I cannot write that fast.
KIMBERLY:
Oh okay sorry. Now let me know when you are ready to move on.
Let me know if at any time you have any questions during this lesson let me
know.
SAMANTHA:
Okay, thanks! I do have a question, I thought geography was just
the study of the Earth, so why is geography involve the cultural and physical
items on Earth?
KIMBERLY:
That is an excellent question. You’re right that geography is
the study of the Earth, so that includes all the physical and cultural features
on Earth.
(Pause)
Can you think of some physical and cultural features of the
United States?
SAMANTHA:
Some physical features of the United States would be like oceans
and the physical landmarks of the United States, such as the Atlantic Ocean. Cultural
features would be things like the language spoken here, English, and the
religion here, which Christianity.
KIMBERLY:
You are spot on! I think you know enough about the United States
and the geographic features behind the United States for you to take that cross
country senior trip.
SAMANTHA:
Thank you so much for all your help, in brushing up on my
geography skills. I am so looking forward to this trip.
End Scene
Scene III
(At rise we
see SAMANTHA in her room waking up from her dream feeling like she knows
everything she knows for her trip)
SAMANTHA:
Wow what a dream! I love the geographic hero! She helped me
understand what I didn’t about geography.
(SAMANATHA,
all smiley, goes out to the kitchen where LISA is ready to tell her the big
news)
SAMANTHA:
OMG, mom guess what?
LISA:
What is Samantha why do you look, so happy?
SAMANTHA:
Well, I went to take a nap and I had the best dream.
LISA:
What was the dream about?
SAMANTHA
The dream was me in this place I didn’t recognize, and this girl
comes up and says she was sent there to help me with my geography skills, she
called herself the Geographic Hero, so she taught me all of what I was struggling
with in geography, so now I am all set to help you and dad drive.
(MICHAEL
pops his head out to add his own comment)
MICHAEL:
Samantha, you are so happy. It is disgusting!
(LISA give
a dirty look to MICHAEL)
LISA:
Michael, for once could you be happy for your sister and not add
in your own comments.
MICHAEL:
Fine just this one time, but only since I get to go on the trip
too. (To SAMANTHA)Samantha I am very happy for you.
SAMANTHA:
(To MICHAEL giving him a weird look) Oh I know you’re so happy
for me, just because you want to go somewhere
LISA:
Well I guess we better starting planning the trip and talk about
it when your dad returns home from work.
SAMANTHA:
Thank you so much mom! And thank you Geographic Hero for all
your hard work to help me better understand geography.
END SCENE
Ok this is the most wonderful thing I have ever seen. You should incorporate educational plays like this in your classroom at least once a week. Maybe have students write some too?
ReplyDeleteAww thanks Sam! You really think my plays are that good, that I could incorporate them into my classroom?
